How windy is too windy?

Find out how the various wind strengths affect you. Conditions have to be extremely windy before the Storebælt Bridge is closed to all traffic. But at 10 m/s, you need to take particular care if you are driving across the bridge in a vehicle vulnerable to wind.

There are strict rules for when road users are warned about wind and gales, and when it is no longer safe to drive across the bridge. The wind has to reach 25 m/s and blow at gale force strength before all traffic is halted. But wind-vulnerable vehicles are warned of crosswinds at 10 m/s and are cautioned against driving across the bridge when crosswinds reach 15 m/s.

The chart below sets out when drivers of wind-vulnerable vehicles are advised not to cross the bridge or when the bridge is closed to all traffic.

Safety rules at times of high winds on the Storebælt Bridge

Wind (North/South)  Information on the Storebælt Bridge
High wind (10 m/s) Yellow flashing light and signs on the bridge warn vehicles vulnerable to wind against crosswinds.
Strong breeze (15 m/s) and crosswind Vehicles vulnerable to wind (e.g. light commercial vehicles or passenger cars towing a caravan or trailer) are informed before the last exit that crossing the bridge is inadvisable. The recommended speed for other vehicles is max. 80 km/h.
Fresh gale (20 m/s) and crosswind Vehicles vulnerable to wind (e.g. light commercial vehicles or passenger cars towing a caravan or trailer) are informed before the last exit that crossing the bridge is inadvisable. The recommended speed for other vehicles is max. 50 km/h.
Gale (25 m/s) The bridge is barred to all traffic with barriers. Signs warn of closure and expected time of reopening at the last exits before the bridge.

Turbulence occurs at the pylons (the 254 m high columns above the roadway carrying the bridge) and the anchor blocks (the large triangular blocks under the roadway level) which increases the risk of strong gusts of wind. Therefore, we recommend that you reduce your speed when passing the pylons and anchor blocks.
