Shortly after the turn of the year, a new road toll system was launched in Denmark. Since 1 January 2025, Danish and foreign trucks weighing 12 tons and above have been required to pay for driving on Danish state roads and some municipal roads.
The government has tasked Sund & Bælt with collecting the road toll and performing digital checks.
The road toll can be paid by purchasing a digital toll ticket on vejafgifter.dk or automatically via a satellite-based box or an app.
Most users have chosen to pay the road toll by using a box from one of the three toll service providers. Approximately 50,000 boxes are now installed and active in the system.
During the first month of the scheme, 161 million driven kilometers have been registered on the tolled road network. Of these, 124 million kilometers were driven by Danish hauliers and 37 million kilometers by international hauliers.
The development task, which has been extensive, was carried out in close dialogue with the transport industry, and the launch went as planned.
"Go-live proceeded smoothly, and no major technical challenges affecting users were experienced. Our figures show that over 98 percent of the users pay the toll correctly, and that number is increasing", says Katrine Hauge Vej-Hansen, head of the Kilometer Tolling scheme at Sund & Bælt.
To ensure payment control, Sund & Bælt's camera equipment automatically reads truck number plates at key traffic points. Additionally, mobile control units are moved around to apply a control pressure across the country. If a truck is registered on tolled roads without having paid the road toll, a fine of 4,500 kroner is issued.
To give all hauliers the opportunity to get started with the scheme and handle any technical challenges, it has been decided not to issue fines before 9 January 2025.
