That many Danes have spent their summer holidays in Denmark is reflected in traffic across the Storebælt Bridge. In July, no fewer than 1,368,886 vehicles crossed the bridge, making it the biggest travel month since its opening just over 25 years ago.
The summer’s concert programme also boosted the traffic figures.
"We could clearly see a rise in traffic when Coldplay, followed by Bruce Springsteen, performed at Parken in Copenhagen,” says Jens Kjær Nielsen, Toll Station Manager. “We’ve had a very busy summer, but there’s been a great holiday atmosphere among our customers who have taken the extra waiting time at the toll station in good spirits.”
The holiday traffic is expected to continue for the next two weeks as many Danes return from holiday.
"There are still two major travel weekends before the schools start again and there are many 'efterskole'* students who will be driven to their new schools by their parents. I won’t venture to say whether more records will be broken, but motorists should expect congestion on the roads and are advised to avoid the peak midday hours,” says Jens Kjær Nielsen.
Traffic forecasts for the coming weekends are available at Storebælt’s website with traffic updates available via sms. Text BRO INFO to 1231. The service will end automatically after 7 days.
