Winner of the expansion of the Øresund Motorway
The Øresund Motorway, which runs across Amager from Exit 20, Copenhagen C, in the west to Copenhagen Airport and the Øresund Link in the east, is currently under heavy strain. Traffic jams and congestion are frequent, causing delays for road users. The main issues occur in the western section and at the Kastrup interchange, where capacity is particularly challenged.
To improve conditions for the many motorists using the motorway, a majority in the Danish Parliament has decided, as part of the Infrastructure Plan 2035, to expand the Øresund Motorway.
Munck Havne & Anlæg will undertake the first phase of the motorway expansion. This will be a main contract, including the addition of extra lanes between Exit 20, Copenhagen C, and Exit 17, Airport West. Furthermore, a parallel ramp will be constructed between Exit 19, Ørestad, and Exit 20, Copenhagen S.
“We look forward to collaborating with Munck Havne & Anlæg on the expansion of the Øresund Motorway to create more capacity along the route,” says Klaus S. Jørgensen, Director of Major Projects at Sund & Bælt.
In the tender process, Sund & Bælt emphasized that the motorway expansion should be carried out with consideration for neighbors and the many daily road users in the area. During the construction period, the same number of lanes will remain open. For the sake of traffic safety and ensuring a secure working environment for road workers, the speed limit will be reduced to 80 km/h.
“As a civil contractor, we are proud to have been selected for this project. The Øresund Motorway is a complex project, and we need to maintain a strong focus on motorists, the surrounding neighbors, and the local environment, while also ensuring high safety standards for our employees working close to traffic. We look forward to getting started and to the collaboration,” says Anders K. Sørensen, Division Director at Munck Havne & Anlæg.
Work on the expansion will begin in the spring of 2026.
