Resurfacing of the Storebælt Bridge

Over the coming weeks, work will be carried out in the evenings and at night on the Storebælt fixed link to replace the existing asphalt wearing course for the benefit of the many road users who cross the link on a daily basis. The new asphalt will provide improved driving comfort and increase the expected service life of the surface by 15 years.

Work will be carried out at night to create a safe work zone free of traffic, allowing for faster and more efficient asphalt replacement than during daytime hours. Traffic will flow bi-directionally on one side of the bridge while work is being carried out on the opposite side.

While a climate-friendly type of asphalt is being laid on Sprogø, a more traditional type has been chosen for the East Bridge. Unlike a solid surface on land, the suspended bridge construction makes adequate compression of the climate-friendly asphalt unfeasible. Consequently, the asphalt on the bridge has been chosen based on a broader assessment of the overall positive impact on its service life.

The new asphalt wearing course will reduce friction from traffic, in turn reducing fuel consumption for the benefit of the climate.

Asphalting work: traffic restrictions
In weeks 38–40, starting on Sunday evening September 18, traffic will flow bi-directionally in the evenings and at night between 19.00 and 06.00. This applies to all days of the week, except Friday and Saturday evenings.

While traffic is diverted, the speed limit is 80 km/h and overtaking will be prohibited. There may be a short waiting time during conversion to bi-directional traffic, as the bridge will be completely closed to vehicles for approx. 30 minutes, while the traffic is rerouted in the evening and again in the morning.

As the existing asphalt wearing course must be removed before a new one can be installed, there will be sections of road with a grooved wearing course while the project is ongoing, with an 80 km/h daytime speed limit as well on the entire link.

Digital sign Installation
Road users will experience by-directional traffic between 20.30 – 05.30 as early as Thursday evening, when new digital signs to optimise traffic safety are being installed on the West Bridge. This, too, will require short-term closures in connection with the rerouting of traffic. Traffic will be rerouted on Thursday and Friday evenings.
