Storebælt Bridge turns down the lights at night

In future, the Storebælt fixed link’s iconic high bridge will appear darker than before as a result of Sund & Bælt’s decision to switch off the structural lighting.

The change means that the pylons’ outer surfaces will no longer be illuminated. Lighting on the structural elements below the roadway level will be maintained to safeguard shipping.

The structural lighting was replaced during the spring with the latest LED lighting technology as part of a comprehensive energy optimisation programme of the lighting systems at Sund & Bælt’s infrastructure. However, the lighting will now be reduced even further following the government’s announcement that all unnecessary lights in public buildings should be switched off. Lights may appear on the bridge on certain days.

The change means that for road users crossing the East Bridge at night, the experience will be similar to that on an ordinary motorway.
