Sund & Bælt introduces radar surveillance on the Storebælt Bridge
As part of the protection of the Storebælt Bridge, a total ban on drones in the vicinity of the bridge was introduced in spring 2026. Sund & Bælt will now erect radar masts on and around the Storebælt Bridge to monitor the airspace and help ensure compliance with the ban. The new system will make it possible to quickly detect and identify drones in the area.
“Sund & Bælt, as the infrastructure owner, is responsible for monitoring and protecting our facilities, and the Storebælt Bridge is critical infrastructure for Denmark. Radar surveillance gives us a new tool to carry out this task, and in cooperation with the authorities, we will continuously assess the need for further measures,” says Mikkel Hemmingsen, CEO of Sund & Bælt.
Sund & Bælt has been working on the radar surveillance system for around a year, and the system is being introduced in close cooperation with the Danish National Police and the Danish Armed Forces.
The system will provide the police with a sound basis for assessing the situation and, if necessary, intervening. Sund & Bælt has agreed a fixed procedure and division of responsibilities with the police for this type of incident.
The solution is based on radar technology that provides a complete situational picture of the airspace over Great Belt. The solution can also be scaled to other types of infrastructure. The radar masts at Storebælt will be erected in autumn 2026 and are expected to be operational by the end of the year.
Sund & Bælt will continue to use drones in the area as part of the operation and maintenance of the Storebælt Bridge. The work to erect the radar masts will not affect traffic across the bridge.
