The Storebælt Bridge is turning 25

The birthday celebrations

On Wednesday 14 June 2023 it will be 25 years since the Storebælt Bridge opened to road traffic. For the past quarter of a century, the bridge has had tremendous social significance as it connects Zealand and Funen and is an East-West traffic lifeline. A cause for celebration indeed! This is how we plan to mark this momentous event.

Special exhibition: "A thousand years of the island of Sprogø”

Since the bridge opened, Sprogø has become perhaps the country's busiest island. Nevertheless it is still an island full of secrets and forgotten stories. To celebrate the Bridge's birthday, East Funen Museum is holding the exhibition: "A thousand years of the island of Sprogø".

The exhibition runs from 31 March to 31 October

The Bridge Run across Storebælt

In 1998, the Bridge Run helped to inaugurate the Storebælt Bridge, and now runners are once again ready to celebrate the 25th birthday of the bridge for all Denmark. Stay tuned when the starting pistol sounds for the Storebælt Bridge's big birthday run – a unique half marathon with 10,000 runners.

Birthday decorations at the toll station and on the pylons

We’re decorating both directions of the Storebælt Bridge toll station. The Bridge pylons will also be lit up in red & white to mark its 25th birthday.

The decorations will be visible on the days around 14 June

Nature Day on Sprogø

When the Storebælt Bridge opened, the new part of Sprogø was barren. Now it is abundant and rich with birds, insects and flora. Traffic and nature live side by side. But more can be done and this is why the professional workshop, 'Nature day on Sprogø – ideas competition for increased biodiversity and CO2 capture around the Storebælt Link’ is being held.

The workshop is being organised on 13 and 14 June

Japanese sister bridge is also turning 25

The Storebælt Bridge's Japanese sister, the Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge, also opened in 1998. Ever since, Sund & Bælt and the owners of the Akashi-Kaikyo bridge have exchanged experiences and best practice on operation and maintenance. As a result, the two bridges’ birthdays are being celebrated in both Denmark and Japan.

The celebrations will take place around 14 June

Memorial stone on Sprogø

Between 1923 and 1961, women who did not live according to the sexual norms of the time could be labelled 'morally weak' and be put in the Women's Institution on Sprogø. This year marks 100 years since the women's home opened, and it is marked with a memorial stone in their honour.

The commemoration will be in August

The Gran Fondo Cycle Race across Storebælt

The Tour de France peloton crossed Storebælt in 2022. Now 10,000 cyclists will also have the opportunity to ride across Denmark's longest bridge when the starting pistol sounds for the Gran Fondo Storebælt cycle race.
