Summer holiday traffic sets record on Storebælt
Almost one and a half million vehicles crossed The Storebælt Bridge in July. That corresponds to more than 47,000 vehicles per day or more than 30 vehicles per minute.
The summer traffic figure therefore exceeds the previous July record set last year, when 1,382,316 vehicles crossed The Storebælt Bridge. This represents an increase of 5.4 per cent. Traffic on the Storebælt Link has generally increased year by year, and to keep pace, Sund & Bælt has continuously introduced new initiatives to free up additional capacity.
On the busiest days, Sund & Bælt deployed extra staff at the toll station, where employees were on hand to help motorists quickly through the card payment lanes.
At the same time, a new Storebælt ticket launched in the spring has helped move part of the traffic more quickly through the toll station. The Storebælt ticket makes it possible to purchase a ticket in advance and use the express lanes.
The ticket is primarily aimed at international customers, who often do not use Brobizz or Number Plate Payment.
“We can see that the Storebælt ticket is working as intended. It enables customers to purchase a ticket for the express lanes in advance, and it has particularly helped many international customers pass through the toll station more quickly. Together with extra staffing on the busiest days, this has contributed to smoother traffic flow throughout the summer,” says Jens Villemoes, Head of Press at Sund & Bælt.
More than 21,000 Storebælt tickets were sold in July alone, with German customers accounting for the largest share of sales.
