To tender
Sund & Bælt is seeking a main contractor to upgrade Halsskov Port and Knudshoved Port on either side of the Great Belt. The upgrade will make it possible to deploy ferries between the two ports at short notice in the event of a prolonged disruption to the Storebælt fixed link.
The work is part of efforts to strengthen contingency preparedness for Denmark’s critical infrastructure. If traffic on the Storebælt fixed link is disrupted for an extended period, the ports will enable emergency ferries to be deployed to maintain traffic across the Great Belt. The aim is to safeguard security of supply and mobility between eastern and western Denmark.
“The Storebælt fixed link is vital to mobility and security of supply in Denmark. We therefore also need to have a plan B if the bridge becomes unavailable for an extended period. By upgrading the two ports, we are creating the option of deploying ferries if the need arises,” says Frederik Fisker, Director of Project Development at Sund & Bælt.
New quay facilities and marshalling areas
The two ports have not been used for ferry operations since 1998 and require extensive upgrades before they can accommodate modern ferries. The contractor will, among other things, dredge the harbour basins, establish new quay facilities and marshalling areas, and repair the existing breakwater. The contractor will also remove existing structures that would obstruct the upgrade and use of the new facilities.
The tender concerns the reconstruction of the ports and not the ferry operations themselves. A/S Storebælt, part of Sund & Bælt, is the client for the project.
